BANYULE NILLUMBIK
TECH SCHOOL

Pedagogy is built into the very design of the new Banyule Nillumbik Tech School, located on the grounds of Melbourne Polytechnic’s Greensborough Campus. The facility aims to equip students with an innovation mind frame in a rapidly changing global economy, with an emphasis on vital science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills.

The design establishes a building that acts as ‘third teacher’, a building which not only accommodates immersive, collaborative and student-led learning, but also demonstrates the principles of science, ideation and physical making.

The building design reifies these principles: diagonal wall treatments reference the practice of origami, the use of whiteboard film transforms surfaces into learning tools, while cutaway floors and wall linings reveal the building’s internal structure for educative purposes.

Space planning of the Tech School incorporates the provision of large collaborative teaching spaces, flexible break-out zones, briefing and presentation spaces, a wet lab, digital and physical creation spaces and an industry focus area.
