Writer: Tectura ArchitectsTectura Architects

On Thursday 17 August 2017, Tectura’s Elizabeth Grigg and Melika Grigg-Baycan joined Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, James Merlino, Vicky Ward MP, Anthony Carbines MP and Melbourne Polytechnic CEO Rob Wood for a sod turning ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on the new Banyule-Nillumbik Tech School.

Due to open in mid-2018, the new Tech School is part of an initiative by the Victorian Department of Education to bridge the gap between secondary and tertiary education; to expose young people to the industries and employment opportunities of tomorrow.

The tech school has been expertly designed to equip students with an innovation mind frame in a rapidly changing global economy, with an emphasis on developing vital science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills.

Design elements of the new facilities include briefing and presentation spaces, a collaboration space, wet lab, digital and physical creation spaces and an industry focus area.

A valued asset to Melbourne Polytechnic’s refurbished Greensborough Campus is the Melbourne Innovation Centre, an internationally acclaimed business incubator providing expertise, training, programs and networks to help grow sustainable business enterprises, create work opportunities and boost economic development.

At the Greensborough facility there is a collaborative working space for up to 30 people, as well as 24 offices—including some with sliding partitions to form larger areas—a breakout area and a mixture of small-to-medium-sized meeting rooms.

The success of the Melbourne Innovation Centre is contingent upon the cross-pollination of ideas. Tectura’s design supports this by providing a plethora of flexible work spaces to choose from to nurture spontaneous discussion and idea generation.
