The Victorian Gene Technology Access Centre in Melbourne is a gene science research and study facility that brings together scientists and VCE students throughout Victoria, offering a nucleus for the development of Australia’s future scientists.

Awarded the Best New Educational Facility, Victoria 2004, by the Australian Chapter of Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI), the centre represents a successful collaboration between the Dept. of Microbiology, the University of Melbourne, the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and the University High School, with funding provided by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Facilities include flexible internal spaces as well as teaching laboratories, interactive classrooms, conference facilities and gallery spaces. The site’s lack of open space and the proximity of existing neighbouring buildings—including a three-level underground car park—made for complex conditions which the building design resolved. This included addressing the lack of student outdoor space by elevating the building, thus providing an enhanced student amenity by way of a covered under-croft area.
