WESTGATE BRIDGE MEMORIAL PARK
The Memorial Park was built to commemorate those who lost their lives during the construction of the West Gate Bridge in 1970 and to increase community awareness of workplace accidents.
Located on the actual site of the bridge’s collapse, the design of the Memorial Park creates a link to the West Gate Bridge, West Gate Park, Scienceworks Museum and the Yarra River and its jetties.
As chairperson of the West Gate Bridge Memorial Park Association, Serdar Baycan, Tectura’s Director, developed the project brief, initiated the design competition and oversaw the development of the park.
Memorial services are held there annually on October 15, the anniversary of the collapse. The park also acts as a perpetual reminder to government, industry and trade unions to provide a safe workplace for workers.
