YARRA RANGES TECH SCHOOL
DISCOVERY CENTRE

Lilydale Tech School’s new Discovery Centre is part of an initiative on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education to engage school-age students with new technologies and education pathways.

The centre’s focus on STEM education, 3D manufacturing and robotics required the provision of both traditional and collaborative education spaces to support explicit teaching as well as student-directed, project-based work. The classrooms allow for collaborative and active learning, with the use of whiteboard film transforming surfaces into learning tools. In this way the building itself becomes a ‘third teacher’.

The Exhibition Space is the first point of call for the centre’s visitors and its fresh, futuristic aesthetic reflects the educational purpose of the centre. The irregular internal layout and varying ceiling heights of the existing building are complemented by the geometric ceiling and floor installations, suspended feature lighting and feature walls.

The building’s entrance—with its corrugated iron cladding contrasting with bold, fluorescent paintwork—presents a highly visible approach to the Discovery Centre.
